When I first set up my trusty Dreamcast to play the latest addition to the ever growing Test Drive series, Le Mans (TDLM), I was only expecting some nice eye candy and less than a realistic racing sim. I had read a couple of previews that stated the graphics engine for this racing game threw around more polygons than any other console game on the market. I took that with a grain of salt, however, as so many polys moving on the screen can cause a real system slow down unless such are programmed well.

Infogrames did a simply outstanding job. At moments, the graphics are so picturesque that they often required a second look. This actually became a problem for me, as Le Mans cars are just soooooo fast that taking a second look at something on the screen would find me smashing into a wall! And this brings me to an important point — for those of you looking for a great arcade racer, do not come to Test Drive Le Mans expecting such a game environment. This title is certainly more of a driving sim, making the game somewhat more difficult to master. However, the delight of ripping through a double 90–degree corner at 70 plus miles per hour has its "rush" benefits.

The overall look and game play are extremely well completed, and even the sound effects add to the realism of the game. Sometimes games have one feature, but not the other. In the case of TDLM, all are coordinated to produce a highly realistic environment. Another area of this title I feel I must give Infogrames credit for is the game’s fit and finish. The intro movie, the menus and the overall "feel" of the game while playing is terrific.

Some of the game’s features include: four–player split screen; 10 true–to–life track locations; 44 cars; 5 different game modes — and you participate in both day and night conditions.

Test Drive Le Mans is a great racing sim and is also a grand way to show off the power of the Dreamcast. This game is certainly worth the price of admission and, if you still need convincing, take another look at the beautiful screen shots at the official Test Drive Le Mans website!
